Benefits of rotational nursing

Rotations for graduate nurses provide a supported environment in which they can learn and consolidate a range of skills, both clinical and inter-personal. For experienced nurses, it is a way of adapting and diversifying within their role, allowing the exploration of different areas and different skills.

 

For organisations such as Hampshire and IOW Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, it provides a highly skilled, flexible workforce and research shows that staff who rotate have a better understanding of others’ roles which helps provide a better patient experience.

Rotations offer the additional benefit of supporting our succession plans as this rounded programme of clinical and leadership development ensures our future placement of nurse leaders and senior specialists in the field of Child and Adolescent Mental Health.

The rotational programme will seek to champion clinical leadership and career progression for registered nurses ensuring that this essential workforce feels supported, valued, and developed through a robust and well-governed career pathway programme.

The programme

The programme will run throughout the financial year training selected Band 5 nurses across the Rotational Programme for 66 weeks in total, with a commitment to complete the rotations across Liaison (Emergency department in hospital), In patient wards and Specialist community CAMHS services.

Each rotational nurse will be provided with outstanding clinical support and mentorship to enable full development in the expertise of each rotation, completing competencies to demonstrate depth and understanding, whilst also attending the Chartered Institute of Management (CIM) Level 5 leadership programme as part of the rotations.

At the end of the full programme and on completion of the competencies and leadership programme, each nurse will be guaranteed an interview for a Band 6 role.
